Web Development & Technical SEO

Fast, accessible websites and web applications for UK businesses and organisations, with search engine optimisation (SEO) built in from the first page.

Civil Digital designs and builds business websites, service websites, internal portals and web applications. Every site we build is lightweight, accessible and set up so search engines can find, read and understand it — because a website people can't find isn't doing its job.

A good website is clear and quick, not a showcase for the latest trends. We keep what we build standards-compliant, so it stays cheap to host and straightforward to look after, and we handle the technical SEO as part of the build rather than as an extra to bolt on later.

We're based in Bedford and work with businesses and organisations across the UK.

What we build

Websites and web tools, from a few pages to a full application.

Business Websites

Professional, accessible sites that represent your organisation well and help customers find you in search.

Service Websites

Clear, user-focused sites for delivering a specific service, structured around the questions people actually ask.

Internal Portals

Private hubs that bring tools, information and processes together for staff.

Web Applications

Browser-based tools that support real operational tasks on desktop, tablet and phone.

SEO and technical SEO, built in

The groundwork that helps search engines find, understand and trust your pages.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the work of making a website easy to find for the people searching for what you offer. Technical SEO is the part of that work that lives in the website itself: how it is built, structured and served, so search engines can crawl and index every important page and understand what each one is about.

Good content can't rank if search engines can't read it, so we get the technical foundations right on every site we build:

Crawlable content
Important content delivered as real HTML, not hidden behind scripts, images or interactions that search engines may not run.
Titles and descriptions
A unique, descriptive page title and meta description for every page, written for the person searching.
Headings and structure
One clear main heading per page, a logical heading order and meaningful HTML elements, which also helps screen-reader users.
Sitemap and robots.txt
An XML sitemap listing the pages you want found, and a robots.txt file that guides crawlers without blocking what matters.
Canonical URLs and redirects
One address per page to avoid duplicate content, and permanent redirects when a page moves so existing links keep working.
Structured data
Schema.org markup that describes your organisation, services and pages in a form search engines can read directly.
Speed and Core Web Vitals
Lightweight pages, compressed and correctly sized images, and minimal scripts, so pages load quickly and stay stable as they load.
Mobile and accessibility
Layouts that work on any screen size, built with accessibility in mind, so the site works for everyone who visits it.
Search Console set-up
Your site connected to Google Search Console, with the sitemap submitted, so you can see how it's indexed and searched.

The same foundations help AI assistants and answer engines that draw on web content to understand who you are and what you do.

We'll be straight with you about what SEO can and can't do. Nobody can honestly guarantee a ranking: where you appear depends on competition, the quality and usefulness of your content, and your reputation, as well as the technical work. What we can do is make sure nothing in how your site is built holds it back.

Already have a website?

If your current site is slow, hard to find in search, or difficult to update, we can review its technical SEO, accessibility and performance and tell you plainly what's worth fixing. Sometimes that means targeted improvements to the site you have; sometimes a rebuild is the better value. Either way, you'll get an honest recommendation.

How we work

The same four steps we follow on every project.

  1. Understand. Who the site is for, what they need to find or do, and what they're likely to search for.
  2. Assess. Every realistic option, from a few well-built pages to a full web application, against your budget.
  3. Recommend. The best-fit approach, the pages and structure it needs, and what it will take to maintain.
  4. Deliver. Build, test on desktop and mobile, set up the technical SEO, then hand over and support.

Common questions

What is the difference between SEO and technical SEO?

SEO covers everything that affects how easily people find your site in search, including your content and your reputation elsewhere on the web. Technical SEO is the part handled in the build: page structure, speed, mobile support, sitemaps, canonical URLs, redirects and structured data. It's the foundation the rest depends on.

Can you guarantee my website will rank on the first page?

No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Rankings depend on competition and on content and reputation as well as technical quality. We make sure the website itself is built to be found, and we'll advise honestly on what else would help.

Will my website work on phones and be accessible?

Yes. Every site we build is responsive, so it adapts to any screen size, and is built with accessibility in mind from the start, including the standards your organisation is held to.

When is a web application a better fit than a website?

A website mainly publishes information. A web application lets people do something: record, book, look up or manage data. If your team needs a tool rather than pages, we'll also look at whether Microsoft Power Platform or bespoke application development would serve you better.
